Akram Azimi was the 2013 Young Australian of the Year. Born in Afghanistan, Akram moved to Perth as a child and went from being an “ostracised refugee kid” to head boy at Warwick Senior High School. Akram is studying a triple major in law, science and arts at UWA. He is the co-founder of I Am The Other, which raises awareness of Indigenous issues in universities. Akram has mentored young Indigenous people in the Kimberley region, primary school students in Wyalkatchem and a Special Olympics athlete in order to help raise community awareness of disability issues.
