COAST is a musical and cinematic love letter to the coastline of Australia, a visually poetic celebration of our connection to the sea over the past 100 years. Amidst the iconic pines at Somerville we present the world premiere of the film tribute Girt By Sea, accompanied by an enigmatic score played live by award-winning Australian band The Panics.
In Girt By Sea director Shane McNeil draws on the extensive visual collections held by The National Film and Sound Archive and ABC Archives along with a mass of crowd-sourced home movies, to weave a lyrical and contemplative interpretation of Australia’s coastal history.
The evening will also feature The Panics and the filmmakers in conversation as they discuss how the archival images and musical composition came together to create this mesmerising evocation of our long standing love affair with the Australian coast.
