Selections from Duke Ellington's The Sacred Concerts

The open-throated chorus of Cape Town Opera contains an ensemble that is called, quite justifiably, the Voice of the Nation, and when its members let rip you seem to hear an entire people expressing primal emotions of defiant pride and exuberant joy.

Cape Town Opera’s Voice of the Nation Ensemble is the melding of 23 remarkable voices drawn from all corners of South Africa. Winners of the 2013 International Opera Awards ‘Chorus of the Year’ this diverse group has quickly emerged as one of the most compelling and varied vocal ensembles on the planet.

Their breathtaking sound and extensive repertoire has seen them quickly garner glowing acclaim, from the townships of Johannesburg to the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle.

In this Australian exclusive, the Voice of the Nation Ensemble will showcase repertoire from the great romantic operas and spiritual songs from Africa and America. In an enchanting pairing, the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra will join the choir onstage to perform selections from The Sacred Concerts by Duke Ellington.
