If this is the standard of opera achieved by collaboration with other companies, all one can say is, Encore! THE CAPE TIMES
Verdi’s final tragic opera, fuelled by his deep love of Shakespeare, stunned the world: here was a taut, thrilling adaptation of Othello which recast many of the composer’s musical trademarks in a work of startling power and originality. Staged in Perth for the first time, Verdi’s Otello is a masterwork of the operatic repertoire.
Simon Phillips directs this landmark production and West Australian Opera’s Artistic Director Joseph Colaneri leads as conductor. Italian tenor Antonello Polombi commands in the title role and heads an all-star cast which includes the inimitable Cheryl Barker as Desdemona, James Clayton as Iago and
Fiona Campbell as Emilia.
West Australian Opera is joined by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and members of the Cape Town Opera Chorus for this very special event, unleashing in this monumental work an epic
wall of sound.
